Is Dell XPS 15 Still the Best 15-inch Windows laptop?

The XPS 15's recent redesign radically reduced the bezels and gave the computer a more contemporary appearance, thus reducing the bezel. You may identify the thickness of the bloated display borders by the thickness of the ugly borders. Even though I've witnessed it in a number of forms over the last few years, I still favour the way the screen flows into the lower keyboard region. While it may sound like a cliché, those razor-thin borders truly make the screen look like it is hovering.

How can Dell improve on the already great XPS 15? By incorporating the most up-to-date hardware from Intel, whose new hybrid chips offer substantially improved multitasking capability over previous generations. We were impressed by the XPS 15's redesign two years ago, and last year, Dell offered OLED displays, which resulted in us stating that it was virtually flawless in our review. Even though the XPS 15 is still the one that every PC manufacturer aspires to manufacture, it is important to appreciate that it has remained a popular 15-inch notebook.

Dell XPS 15 2022 feels like an alloy exterior and a smooth carbon fiber keyboard surround were honed to perfection. Every other aspect of its design is likewise exceptional, from the aluminium exterior to the smooth carbon fibre around the keyboard. I'm sure Dell will eventually provide an XPS 15 Plus that incorporates design ideas from the newest XPS 13 Plus, but the standard model currently has a level of polish that far exceeds most Windows laptops.

Hybrid processors are the XPS 15's biggest attraction this year. In addition to being high-performance and low-power, they can now handle a lot more work than last year's. Saving battery life is just one of the advantages. A 45-watt RTX 3050 Ti GPU is now even more of a genuine powerhouse with NVIDIA's new 45-watt RTX 3050 Ti GPU.

Compared with last year's model, our review machine scored 17 percent higher in the PCMark 10 benchmark and 40 percent faster in the Cinebench multithreaded test, thanks to its Core i7-12700H, 16GB of RAM, and NVIDIA GPU. Those scores mean that the XPS 15 might save you hours when editing huge video files or rendering 3D projects. The new CPU also gave the XPS 15 a slight edge in some tough games like Halo Infinite. In 1080p resolution and with medium settings, I got a steady 60fps while playing Halo Infinite, whereas last year's XPS 15 struggled with demanding shooters. (It ran Overwatch well, but that was about it.)

The XPS 15's 3.5K OLED display is still an excellent choice for content creators, with good colour reproduction, deep blacks, and all of the benefits you'd expect. I would like to see Dell push this display further, particularly after both Apple and Microsoft introduced high refresh rate displays in their laptops. Adding a bit more fluidity when scrolling through webpages would also make the already great XPS 15 experience even better, as would playing some future-proof Halo Infinite.

The XPS 15 continues to be a great laptop for work. Its quad-speaker sound system is still impressive, its keyboard is still clicky and responsive, and its trackpad is still smooth and big. It's also got plenty of ports, including three USB-C ports (two of which support Thunderbolt 4), an SD card reader, and a headphone jack. That's also why we still think it's a fantastic laptop for work.

Since the Dell XPS 15 will make some battery life improvements, it's good to see it keep the SD card slot. I'm also glad Dell is sticking with the SD card slot, which will make offloading photos and videos easy. The XPS 15 lasted 13 hours and 12 minutes in our benchmark, which is a hefty improvement from last year when it lasted under 10 hours.

Despite my gushing, there's still room for improvement. The keyboard, trackpad, and wrist rest are fantastic, but they also look a bit messy after light use. I'd love to see some sort of oleophobic coating that doesn't require so much wiping down. And of course, additional ports would be great. The XPS 15 starts at $1,449 with a Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM, but we'd recommend bumping those specs up significantly. The review unit cost $2,253—a relatively modest price given the hardware you get. Although I'd spend a bit more to increase the SSD and RAM, you may often be juggling large files on this laptop.

Dell's XPS 15 is the closest thing to a workhorse machine that the company has ever produced. It is powerful enough to handle almost any task, but it can also play games when you want to relax. Moreover, it comes standard with almost everything you would want in a modern laptop, especially if you choose the stunning OLED screen. Dell's excellent design is sure to last for years.
